African leaders: at COP28 you MUST deliver for Africa

Erastus COP27 (1)-3

Africa can no longer afford to let big oil and extractive industries drive our planet deeper into disaster. We can no longer continue to let our frontline communities bear the brunt of extreme weather events.

As the world turns its gaze towards the highly anticipated COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, our eyes are on African Leaders.

It’s time for them to show bold, decisive action and steer Africa towards a 100% just transition to renewable energy.

Call for action now that will redefine Africa's role in the fight against the climate crisis!

To: African Heads of State:

We demand you step up, show vision, represent the interests of Africa and Africans, and lead. That means:

  • Stop funding the catastrophic destruction of our climate by putting an end to costly and destructive fossil fuel subsidies
  • Follow through on the commitment to operationalise loss and damage financed from existing funding arrangements with a focus on addressing loss and damage in Africa and other developing countries.
  • Act to protect the socio-economic and historical significance of most African coastal states and our island nations as they are already facing the negative consequences of the climate crisis.
  • Move to prevent the loss of biodiversity in all spheres (marine and terrestrial), which is exacerbating the current climate crisis.
  • Act decisively to protect carbon sinks, like peatlands and the pristine Congo Basin Forest from deforestation and oil exploration.
  • Divert from offsetting and false carbon market and biodiversity credit solutions.

Stop Deep Sea Mining

In Africa, where biodiversity flourishes on land and in its surrounding seas, the deep sea is a treasure trove of biodiversity and home to untold wonders and possibilities. It is also one of our best allies against climate change. But a threat is coming: deep sea mining.
