African leaders: take action for Africa and the climate now

Risper COP27

Africa is not just on the frontline of the climate crisis, it is on the frontline of extraction and exploitation and a new scramble for African oil and gas - that has to end.

African leadership must step up. They can’t simply hide behind the greed of foreign governments and corporations - they must take responsibility, and tackle the extractive system head on if we have any hope of tackling the climate crisis.

To: African Heads of State

We demand you step up, show vision, represent the interests of Africa and Africans, and lead. That means:

  • Phase out coal in all African countries
  • Resist the new scramble for African oil and gas and commit to Net Zero by 2050
  • Ditch short term, reckless investments in fossil fuels and get ahead of the game by investing in long term renewable energy solutions, creating jobs and a cleaner future
  • End new industrial logging and agriculture in rainforests, and set targets for restoration of already degraded forests
  • African leaders must do better for our people, urging foreign governments to work with them to curtail illegal fishing and logging, support impacted local and Indigenous communities directly, and back a transition to renewable energy sources
  • Finally, African leaders must focus on building partnerships within the continent and beyond it over loans, grants and other forms of neocolonial aid.
