South Africa's air is killing thousands of people a year. And the government just keeps giving Eskom, South Africa's coal operator, more time to keep polluting.
Our years-long piece of investigative research has confirmed what communities near coal plants have known for years: the air is not safe to breathe.
In 2023 alone, air pollution, most of it from coal, contributed to an estimated 42,000 premature deaths in South Africa, including 1,300 deaths of children under five. That's 8% of all deaths in the country that year.
South Africa is one of the most coal-dependent economies in Africa. The South African government is making a clear energy choice at the moment: in favour of coal expansion.
We cannot continue investing in an ageing, polluting energy system. Coal workers and communities deserve certainty too. We are calling for a real transition that doesn't trade one crisis for another.
South Africa has the sun, wind, skills, and resources to create decent jobs, strengthen energy security, and give young people a future in a growing green economy.
Add your name today to help end coal expansion, support a community-led Just Transition and invest in a cleaner, fairer future for South Africa.
