SA government: Stop new coal mine near Rietvlei Nature Reserve

sunrise-over-rietvlei-dam

A conservation area since 1923 - home to rhino, buffalo, cheetah and birdlife, which provides 15% of Pretoria’s water is under threat. A new coal mine proposed by brick making giants, Corobrik has had its ‘environmental plan’ approved by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.

THIS IS SHOCKING.

Not only is this a bad idea for our climate, biodiversity and wildlife, the impacts on air and water quality could have significant health impacts for people in multiple municipalities in the surrounding area.

Tell Gwede Mantashe, whose ministry is responsible for approving this proposed mine, to stop this project before it starts. As Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Barbara Creecy cannot ignore this issue either.

We can’t let this happen. Will you add your name and pressure the SA government to act?

To: Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe and Barbara Creecy, Department of Fisheries, Forestry and the Environment

Stop any assessments and proposals for the Corobrik coal mine immediately.

Stop Deep Sea Mining

In Africa, where biodiversity flourishes on land and in its surrounding seas, the deep sea is a treasure trove of biodiversity and home to untold wonders and possibilities. It is also one of our best allies against climate change. But a threat is coming: deep sea mining.
