title: STOP NUCLEAR GAMBLE
description: Kenya already generates close to 90% of its electricity from renewables and holds an estimated 33,000 megawatts of untapped clean potential. It does not need the most expensive, highest-risk power on earth.

Kenya's government wants to build a multi-billion-dollar nuclear plant on the shores of Lake Victoria, in Siaya. **Coastal communities in Kilifi rejected it first, so the state moved it here**.

The government's own 2023 assessment ruled out this entire region as geologically unstable for a nuclear plant. \[1\]

Communities pressed state officials and Siaya's leaders for basic safety answers and got none. Residents came to the public participation forum to be heard, **where some were met with intimidation.**

This project gambles with a freshwater system that yields 800,000 tonnes of fish a year and **sustains over 40 million people across East Africa**.

Kenya already generates close to **90% of its electricity from renewables** and holds an estimated 33,000 megawatts of untapped clean potential. It does not need the most expensive, highest-risk power on earth.

**Will you call on the government to halt this project and protect Lake Victoria?**

### We Demand:

1. Halt the Siaya nuclear project. Stop all siting, procurement and preparatory work, and honour the communities' constitutional right to refuse unsafe developments.
2. Publish the evidence in full. Release the 2023 Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment and all seismic studies, to clarify and explain why a site the government's own scientists ruled out was reinstated.
3. Consult before deciding, at home and across the border. Hold genuine public participation in Siaya, and formally consult the Lake Victoria and Nile Basin states whose people share these waters.
4. Uphold the legal and regulatory framework. To ensure that development projects or water-resource interventions in Siaya are sustainable, legally compliant and regionally sound, rigorous Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and meaningful public consultation must serve as non-negotiable prerequisites.
5. Invest in what works. Redirect public funds from a slow, high-risk nuclear megaproject into safe, decentralised solar energy for all Kenyans.
