Help us stop the destructive fishmeal factories in West Africa

Every year, foreign-owned factories grind over half a million tonnes of wild-caught fish from West African waters into fishmeal and fish oil.

That is enough nutrient-rich food to feed 33 million people. Instead, it is exported to feed livestock and farmed salmon in Europe and Asia.

This greedy fishmeal industry is driving marine ecosystems to irreversible collapse, while destroying lives on land.

The areas surrounding these factories mostly built in residential areas are choked by a sickening stench from factory operations. The smog and toxic fumes pouring from these factories are so severe that residents with respiratory conditions have been forced to leave. According to some residents, children are now developing serious health problems, including asthma.

Local fishmongers and fish processors are facing unfair competition and no longer have access to fish to supply the local consumer market.

These women and local fishermen, most of whom depend on these activities to feed their families, are at the forefront of the fight back.

Sign this urgent petition today to stand in solidarity with West African coastal communities and everyone living alongside these factories. We need to force immediate, decisive action from these governments. Join us.

Demand the closure of these toxic factories now.

We call on the authorities of Senegal, Mauritania and The Gambia to:

  1. Close all destructive fishmeal and fish oil factories and establish a moratorium on any new installations.
  2. Ban the use of fresh fish fit for human consumption in the production of fishmeal and fish oil.
  3. Promote sustainable alternatives and implement citizens’ recommendations while respecting environmental rights.
